London Borough of Lewisham continue  to consult  on reinstating the Mountsfield Park cafe and on other long awaited improvements…Letter to Lewisham East MP Heidi Alexander 28th May 2013:

Dear Heidi,

Thank you for your email dated 13 May 2013, regarding the regeneration of Mountsfield Park. The consultation process that was undertaken by Groundworks, indicated that a large group of people/park users felt that both a community garden and a cafe building in the park would be very good ideas. As a result, the Council are currently carrying out an assessment of the long term viability of providing better cafe facilities at Mountsfield Park. Firstly, the Council needs to establish a good business model to present to it’s Finance Board that will support the case for a new cafe. The Council are commissioning a small feasibility study which it hopes will provide a number of different options and benchmark cases, which can then be considered carefully. This is an important step, because the Council will need to consider the long term sustainability of providing a building in the park. Additionally, Officers will be obtaining expressions of interest from local people and organisations to establish the likely take up and use of a community garden. The Council are looking at other opportunities for funding that could help to boost the existing budget and thus help to meet even more of the aspirations of the people that were consulted by Groundworks. The Council would respectfully ask users of the park to be mindful of the continuous cuts to services, that the Councils is currently experiencing. This serve as a reminder that the Council has to ensure that any improvements it delivers, will fulfil the criteria of being used to the required level and that can also be successfully maintained. As you can see, there is a lot going on behind the scenes. I would like to assure you that the regeneration of Mountsfield Park is still on the agenda and that the aforementioned talks and discussions are ongoing. It is hoped that these actions will lead to visible improvements within the park, that can be appreciated by all users.

I hope that the information above has clarified the current situation.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Sheehan,

Executive Director for Customer Services

(London Borough of Lewisham)

It’s unfortunate that the consultation the Council has arranged at short notice to discuss options for the building with a consultant from the Greenwich Cooperative Development Agency who specialises in social enterprises is at the same time and on the same day as the Lewisham Central Local Assembly meeting which is next Wednesday the 12th and has been advertised far in advance. I hope he also turns up on the 17 June at the next FOMP meeting to hear views from those who can’t attend on the 12th because they are going to the Assembly meeting.
