FOMP Meeting 17th June 2013

Agenda and Draft Minutes: Friends of Mountsfield Park Meeting 7pm, 17th June Café of Good Hope

Many thanks to Billy Mizen for opening up Café of Good Hope on Hither Green Lane for our meeting at very short notice. The meeting was due to be held at Hither Green Baptist Church, but unfortunately no one turned up at the church to let us in!

1. Q and A Martin Hyde -Green Space Regeneration Manager LB Lewisham –

– Purpose of current round of consultation
Martin Hyde (LB Lewisham Parks regeneration manager) responded and told us at the meeting the recent consultation about the proposed park café by gcda.or.uk on behalf of LB Lewisham was not consultation they are fact finding.

There were expressions of interest during the meeting for community organised and funded facilities at Mountsfield Park. LB of Lewisham seemed happy to accept bids to this effect but was concerned that if this approach failed in years to come that the Council would have to foot the bill and that the Council Officer responsible would bear this in mind when considering the viability of competing approaches to running café facilities etc. at the park.

– Available budget for improvement works

– Match funding requirements

– Constraints that may reduce likelihood of funds being released by Council for improvements

2. Community Garden -FOMP Statement of Interest

– FOMP’s involvement
FOMP have issued a statement of interest and would be keen to work in partnership with other groups and individuals involved with community gardening at Mountsfield Park

– Working with other groups and individuals that would like to be involved Community gardening across the whole park e.g. planting and coppicing hazel and sweet chestnut

– Is public access to community garden preferred as at the walled garden at Battersea Park

LB Lewisham say that the community garden areas will be publicly accessible during normal park opening hours.

3. Fomp’s Stall at People’s Day Additional volunteers for FOMP People’s Day stall needed. Saturday 13th July.
We ran out of time at the meeting to discuss this!

4. Glendale -Container Cafe (Stainton Tea Rooms).

Update on current situation .

– Does the container toilet work is there a lock on the door, does it comply with Glendale/LB Lewisham DDA commitments.
Jimmy Botton (Junior) attended the beginning of the meeting and said that the container café would be open for business until the end of September 2013. Jimmy also told us that he invested £18,000 in the unit and is keen to recoup his investment and that he has no interest in running permanent park café facilities.

5. Glendale/LB Lewisham – Play Area High level of disappointment with older children’s play area, Missing equipment e.g. See-saw, flaking paint.  Very muddy in winter. Safety surface is a trip hazard. Email comment from group member:  Should the play area be improved in line with cafe improvements. The cafe (with toilets) and play areas are likely to provide the biggest additional draw to the park for most of the week? (Other than dog walking).
LB Lewisham and Glendale noted the deep disappointment with the existing café facilities, dilapidated play area, poor toilet facilities with no lock on the door.

-Progress of Annual Deadly Nightshade removal from the area surrounding the container.
Ran out of time to discuss this issue. LB Lewisham and Glendale are aware of the Deadly Nightshade growing near to the container café.

– Update on sharps clearance from the shrubs near to the container café.
Ran out of time to discuss this issue!
